Professor Todd A. Henry is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and an affiliate faculty member of Critical Gender Studies and Science Studies at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He is one of the leading scholars researching the history of South Korea’s queer communities. He also specializes in modern Korea with an emphasis on the Japanese occupation of Korea and post-colonialism. He has previously written an article on Korea.net about his experience living in Korea during COVID-19. Professor Henry received his B.A. in International Affairs with a focus on East Asia and minored in both Japanese and Spanish Languages and Literatures at the George Washington University; his M.A. in International Relations with a focus on modern Japanese history at Sophia University (Tokyo); and Ph.D. in History with a focus on modern Korean and Japanese history at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I had the privilege of interviewing him on January 14, 2021, through zoom. This interview includes Professor Henry’s journey as a scholar in the field of Korean studies, his contributions, aspirations, and advice on how to succeed in this field.
