Professor Chuyun Oh is an Associate Professor of Dance at San Diego State University. She earned her BA in Dance and Philosophy, and MA in Aesthetics at Ewha Womans University, and PhD in Performance Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. Her research interests include performance ethnography, activism, and racial and gender identities in transnational popular dance. Professor Oh trained in Korean folk dance and then ballet from a young age at the Little Angels Children’s Folk Ballet of Korea and Kirov Academy of Ballet/Universal Ballet Academic. She has received numerous awards from international dance competitions such as Nakano International Dance Competition Japan and Seoul International Dance Competition. She has also toured several countries including South Korea, Japan, Austria, Germany, and the United States (US) as a dancer. Professor Oh recently published, K-Pop Dance: Fandoming Yourself on Social Media, which is the first academic book solely focused on K-Pop dance. I had the privilege of interviewing her on July 13, 2022 via Zoom regarding how her identity as a scholar and dancer influenced her to be a pioneer in the study of K-Pop dance and publish a book on this subject.
