Professor Suk-Young Kim is the head of the Theater and Performance Studies at the School of Theater, Film, and Television at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She has previously taught at Dartmouth College and the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Professor Kim earned her BA and MA in Slavic Literature from Korea University, a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literature from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2001and another Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Theatre and Drama with a Certificate in Gender Studies from Northwestern University in 2005. I conducted a phone interview with Professor Kim on 28 September 2020. This interview details her journey in the field of Korean Studies, her research, various facets of the K-Pop and K-Drama industry, and advice to students pursuing Korean studies.

I was raised in India and the U.S., two countries with varying degrees of interest in Korea. I recently earned my MA in East Asian Studies at UCLA and received my BA in Global Studies with a minor in Korean at UC Berkeley. I am currently seeking opportunities in the entertainment industry.
