Associate Professor Stephen Epstein directs the Asian Languages and Cultures Programme at the Victoria University of Wellington (VUW). He earned a BA in Classics from Harvard College and an MA in Greek and Ph.D. in Classics from UC Berkeley. Professor Epstein specializes in contemporary Korean society, literature and popular culture, literary translation, globalization and social change, and Indonesian fiction. I had the honor of interviewing him through email on 22 September 2020. This interview discusses Professor Epstein’s experience as a Korean Studies professor in New Zealand and his thoughts on the field.
